If you’ve made up your mind that you’re serious about
a maritime job involving watch standing as a deck
officer or engine officer on large vessels, a maritime
academy is a good investment. By graduating from
one of these schools and successfully passing your
Coast Guard license exam, you come out as a third
mate, unlimited ocean, or third assistant engineer,
unlimited horsepower, and would have a lot of options.

Another thing about the academies is that they’ve
adapted to serve a new niche. In the U.S., the demand
for seagoing jobs isn’t what it was in the 1950’s and
60’s. Most of the goods entering U.S. ports are carried
on ships that aren’t U.S. flag vessels. As such, these
schools have expanded their curriculums to include
subjects such as intermodal transport, freight
forwarding, logistics, supply chain management,
cargo management, facilities management, and
international trade. The academies, colleges and
universities with similar curriculums have positioned
themselves to educate those maritime professionals
choosing not to go to sea, or choosing not to
participate in a regimental corps of cadets programs.

But not everyone is looking at the same hand of cards
before them. Not everyone is eighteen, with no kids,
no mortgage and ready to enroll in a full-time
academic program where they are able to attend five
hours a day of classes for the next four years. There’s
no need to stress. There are other ways to earn an
education for those who are determined. And a person’
s time and experience on the job may be regarded by
an employer with great value.
